KANGAROO ISLAND.

Kangaroo Island, an isolated island of tranquillity, beauty and an abundance of wildlife, is a sanctuary without fences for rare bird life, tammer wallabies, short-beaked echidnas, kangaroos, koalas and more. It is a haven and natural habitat for platypus, albatross, leafy-sea dragons, goannas, glossy black cockatoos, bush-tailed possums and black tiger snakes. It has a colony of the smallest penquins in the world.
 

The Island, 113 kilometres southwest of Adelaide is only a short flight away, a 50 minute ferry ride from Cape Jervis or a 90 minute drive. It is the 3rd largest island with many plants and wildlife no longer found elsewhere, coastal views, rocky cliffs, forests, sand dunes, secluded inlets, sandy beaches, wetlands, wineries and an abundance of natural scenery.

Enjoy the Mediterranean climate with mild conditions in winter and summer, with an average temperature in summer of 25°, but sometimes warmer clothes will be needed in the evenings due to cool southern sea breezes. It has a population of 4.300, happy, friendly locals and small townships. 

You can take a self-guided tour of the island by car, a coach journey, a 4WD adventure, boat trip or fishing charter. Bicycle rentals are available on Kangaroo Island, also cars can be hired in Adelaide or on Kangaroo Island. Get back to nature amongst native bushlands and wildlife. Take a guided quad bike tour amongst bushlandd see koalas, kangaroos, echidnas and more. You can go on a mountain bike ride, view romantic sunsets, explore shipwrecks, go swimming, fishing, surfing or beachcombing at Vivonne Beach or go on a wine tasting tour at the many wineries on the Island.

Camping is allowed in approved camping areas but there are many National and Conservation Parks on Kangaroo Island and a National Parks Pass is necessary for entry to some parks for tours and camping. You can purchase an Island Pass which will offer unlimited tour.

 

Visit Kingscote, the Islands largest town, which overlooks the Nepean Bay and is the centre for tourism and shopping. You can fish on the jetty, take a tour at dusk to see the little penguins, visit the local aquarium with its giant cuttlefish, seahorses, reef fish and litttle penguins, watch pelicans feeding at the jetty every day in the afternoon and browse the souvenir shops. The town also has a swimming pool,sports center, two art galleries, restaurants and cafes for dining. The bright, bustling town is an ideal place to visit on Kangaroo Island.

Murry Lagoon is the largest lagoon with secluded campgrounds and here you can go bird watching and see glossy black cockatoos and waterbirds. At Little Sahara, sandboards and toboggans are available for hire, which you can ride down the slopes of the sand dunes. Kelly Hill Caves has underground caves and tunnels, with daily tours or adventure caving for a deeper look. It has souvenir and snack food shops with restrooms and is suitable for picnics. At Cape Borda Lighthouse and Museum, as well as visiting the museum, there is also a tour for the daily firing of the cannon and available accomodation in a lighthouse keeper's cottage. Seal Bay Conservation Park is only accessible with guided tours on the beach to see the sea lions dozing in the sun, or you can take an unguided boardwalk to the lookout. There is souvenir shops and restrooms. At Parndana Wildlife Park, you can walk among the animals and feed the kangaroos and wallabies, pat the koalas and take a walk through the aviary. It has a souvenir shop and BBQ and picnic area. Cape Willoughby Lighthouse, which is the oldest lighthouse in S.A., offers daily tours, or you can take a self-guided heritage walk and there is available accomodation in a self-contained lighthouse keeper's cottage. Flinders Chase National Park has walking and hiking trails where you can see platypus, possums, kangaroos and koalas.Cape Gantheaume Conservastion Park has small bays and beaches to explore to discover relics. Raptor Domain, Birds of Prey and Fang-Tastic has a fantastic collection of birds and a reptile show with lizards and snakes, where you can have an entertaining, educational experience, learning about the birds natural hunting abilities, how to treat snake bites and more. Emu Bay Lavender is a farm of many varieties of lavender, where you can walk amongst the garden, relax with a cup ot tea or coffee and light lunch with lavender shortbread included and browse through the gift shop witch stocks lavender essential oils, candles, soap, other Emu Bay Lavender products and culinaty items.The lavender icecream is a speciality. Adelaide was once classed as the “City of Churches” but is now more widely known as the Festival City as it hosts the Festival of Arts, including the WOMADelaide World Music Festival in March, Adelaide Fringe, Guitar Festival  and the Adelaide Cabaret Festival in June.

Adelaide, surrounded by parklands, a friendly, vibrant, relaxed city, also hosts the Clipsal 500 Adelaide V8 Supercar race in March, world class sporting events, including the Santos Tour down Under and World Tennis Challenge and is the heart of South Australia's wine industry. Adelaide has a high quality food and wine culture with many dining spots.

The city of Adelaide is great for shopping. Central Market for fresh produce, including seafood, cheeses, coffees and smallgoods and Rundle Mall with its alfresco cafes, speciality shops, flower stalls, elegant arcades boutiques and other varieties of shops, are popular spots. Wander around the streets, browse the shops, dine at cafes and restaurants, walk along the banks of the Torrens River, or take a trip around Torrens River on Popeye, the riverboat. Go on a guided city tour. The kids might enjoy The Toy Factory in the Adelaide Hills with the biggest rocking horse in the world which you can climb to the top and which has  the largest range of wooden toys in Australia. There is available public transport, buses, trams, trains, or you can hire a car, catch a taxi or Adelaide City Bikes are free to hire. The train station is situated in North Terrace, where you will also find the Casino, Art Gallery, State Library South Australian Museum and University of Adelaide. Catch a tram to Glenelg Beach, a seaside haven, with its spectacular sunsets, for a swim, fishing sunbaking, a dolphin cruise or just relaxing on the foreshore. Walk along the jetty or promenade. Take the kids to the Beach House to enjoy arcade games, rides, water slides and more. Visit the Bay Discovery Centre for art and historical displays or the Cinema. Check out the early and modern houses along the waterfront. Go shopping for treasures in the unique gift and boutique stores. Dine al fresco in the main street of Glenelg, indulging yourself with gourmet food. .
